My Life as a Tribute Artist

Hello, my name is Phil Solis and I am a professional Dean Martin Tribute Artist. I say "professional" because I do get paid for performing as a Dean Martin Impersonator and I do take the work very seriously. Why Dean Martin? I grew up with a Mom that loved Dean Martin. We watched all his Television shows like the Dean Martin Show, The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, and all the Christmas specials. The music of Dean Martin was often heard in the house and my Mom would get a kick whenever I would try to do a Dean Martin Impression. So, I guess I started very young and then as I grew older I really developed a fond appreciation of the man known as the king of cool. I soon found myself in radio, doing several comedic songs on the Dr. Demento show which aired every Sunday night on KMET. In college I studied theater and took vocal lessons. I sing in Deans key and I use many of his iconic techniques. I started by performing in small venues as Dean Martin and eventually found myself appearing in a Rat Pack show complete with a Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. impersonators. I'm not going to lie, I have since grown addicted to the applause and laughs. This is a real dilemma for me because I really don't want my focus to be on what others think of me but at the same time I want to put on one hell of a show! Working with pro's like Alfredo Miller, Vaughn Suponatime, Nick DeGidio and Laymon Davis has been great for my ego and I owe them so much in what each has taught me.I also have formed my own band called The Black Derby Band. Many changes have occurred since I started in "the business" and there have been challenges. I'll write more about those in future blogs. But for now I just wanted to give you a feel of what I am all about.

Diet and Exercise....ugh!

I really don't enjoy having to be slender, yet muscular like Dean. It's allot of effort. Especially since I love junk food. Not to knock other Dean Martin Tribute Artists, but I really don't understand the FAT maybe even rotund Dean Martin Impersonators. To me it's an insult. If you are truly dedicated to looking and sounding just like Deano you should lose the fat. I have to watch what I eat. Sometimes go on extreme fasting diets and I run or lift weights almost EVERY day. Dean Martin was a fit guy as were many men back in the day. No Taco Bell, McDonalds, and a list of bad food available to our ever seeking processed food generation. In my opinion a good tribute artist should do everything within their power to look like the person they are trying to emulate. NO DEAN MARTIN TRIBUTE ARTIST Should look like this..

Dean Martin Bio

Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti, on June 7, 1917, in Steubenville, Ohio. He was known for being a crooner and actor. He partnered with comedian Jerry Lewis, of one of the most popular comedy teams on stage and television and in motion pictures for 10 years. Martin then moved on to a successful solo career as a singer, an actor, and a television variety show host. During his younger days Martin worked locally in steel mills, delivered bootleg liquor, was a prizefighter, and had a job in a casino. After appearing in local nightspots as a pop singer, he was hired by bandleader Sammy Watkins and began to tour. During an engagement in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1946, he and another performer, comedian Jerry Lewis, began clowning around during each other’s acts. This led to an immensely successful comedy partnership that featured Martin as a suave straight man and Lewis as an immature clown. Before long the two left New York for Hollywood. They made 16 motion pictures together, beginning with My Friend Irma (1949) and ending with Hollywood or Bust (1956). Despite predictions that Martin would fail as a solo act, his career prospered after he ended the partnership with Lewis. Martin struck gold with hit songs such as “That’s Amore” (1953), “Memories Are Made of This” (1955), and “Everybody Loves Somebody” (1964). Simultaneously, he kept his acting career alive, starring in films such as The Young Lions (1958), Some Came Running (1958), Rio Bravo (1959), Bells Are Ringing (1960), Toys in the Attic (1963), and Airport(1970). In addition, Martin performed in several movies with his fellow Hollywood clique members—dubbed the “Rat Pack”—including Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr., notably the heist film Ocean’s Eleven (1960). He died on Decemebr 25th 1995. But his legacy continues on.

SEO Work - HELP!

So how is it that I keep moving back and forth on Google search? Just last week you could easily find my site on PAGE ONE when you typed in Dean Martin impersonator. Now I am on page four??? What happened? I know I recently bought the domain name philsolis.com and moved my primary account over from Yola's free site philsolis.yolasite.com and I suspect that because I took advantage of the free site it for so long, it gave me better visibility. That said, I decided today to switch it back as my primary site and we will see if it pops up next week on page one again. Who knows? My wife is a Marketing genius and has done a ton of SEO work. Perhaps it's time I ask for her help? Everything I have read online says if you state something too many times on your website, google actually counts that as a negative. By the way, just so you don't think I'ma complete goof, I did use all the phrases I could think of in my Metadata. Okay, that's all now.

For the Win

Seems to me that I have met allot of folks that say they want to be a performer but lack the motivation to do what it takes. I have met people that claim they are the very best Frank Sinatra impersonator or the Best Dean Martin impersonator. But do they look the part or even sound similar? In one case I know a guy that had long scraggly hair, dark brown eyes, and could not sing a tune to save his life. He sang flat and was absolutely awful. yet he claims to have been performing as a Frank Sinatra tribute artist for years! Hair - wrong. Eyes - wrong (Sinatra was called Ol' blue eyes for a reason) and to make matters worse he would justify his bad singing by claiming that Sinatra was FLAT! No buddy, Frank Sinatra had one of the best voices and never ever sang flat. Don't make your laziness to not get some vocal training under your belt as an excuse! This is a tough business and being a tribute artist requires allot of work.

Celebrity impersonator

It has occurred to me that I need to update my website to include that I have access to several celebrity impersonators including; Frank Sinatra impersonator, Sammy Davis Jr. Impersonator, Marilyn Monroe impersonator, Elvis impersonator, Johnny Cash impersonator, Rodney Dangerfield impersonator, and aBobby Darin impersonator. I myself have never really thought I would classify what I do as a celebrity impersonator but it makes sense. Business is growing and would love to doing celebrity impression full time! Maybe I should have a tee shirt made that reads; "Celebrity Impersonator" for hire. Think that might work?
